British Ambassador Deborah Bronnert visited the Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday in connection with the publication of Moscow’s textual response to the US’s comeback on security assurances.

In the message, Russia expressed dismay at “increasing US and NATO military activity directly near Russian borders,” while “red lines and indigenous security interests, as well as Russia’s sovereign right to defend them, continue to be ignored.”

“The ultimatum demands to withdraw troops from certain areas on Russian territory, accompanied by threats of tougher sanctions, are unacceptable and undermine the prospects for real agreements,” the document said.

In addition, Moscow said in its response letter that it would reciprocate if the US side is unwilling to agree on “firm, legally binding guarantees of our security from the United States and its allies.” Possible responses include the implementation of measures of a military-technical nature.

The Russian side reiterated that there is no “invasion” of Ukraine, nor plans to invade.

“Therefore, statements about ‘Russia’s responsibility for the escalation’ cannot be viewed otherwise than as an attempt to pressure and devalue Russia’s proposals on security guarantees,” Moscow says.
