Russia will suspend the operations of its mission to NATO from November, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Moscow on Monday.

“NATO is not interested in any kind of equal dialogue, in any kind of collaborative work. But if that is the case, we can’t see any great need to continue to pretend that any change is possible in the foreseeable future, because NATO has already, in fact, said that such change is impossible,” the minister said at a press conference following talks with his counterpart from the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Suzi Carla Barbosa.

“In response to NATO, we are suspending the work of our Permanent Representative to NATO, including the Chief Military Representative,” Lavrov said, adding that the NATO information bureau in Moscow will also be forced to shut down.

NATO announced on October 6 that it would revoke the accreditation of eight Russian diplomats and expel them from Brussels by the end of October.

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “NATO is not interested in any kind of equal dialogue, in any kind of collaborative work. But if that is the case, we can’t see any great need to continue to pretend that any change is possible in the foreseeable future, because NATO has already, in fact, said that such change is impossible. So we have made the following decision. We actually, as a result of NATO’s deliberate steps, do not have the proper conditions for basic diplomacy. In response to NATO, we are suspending the work of our Permanent Representative to NATO, including the Chief Military Representative. Probably as of 1 November, or it will take a few more days. Second, we are suspending the activities of NATO’s military liaison mission in Moscow; its accreditation is being revoked as of 1 November this year. Thirdly, the NATO information office in Moscow, which was set up under the embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium, is being suspended. If NATO members have any urgent issues they can refer to our Ambassador in Belgium. The ambassador who ensures bilateral relations between Russia and the Kingdom of Belgium.”
