In response to the closure of RT DE in Germany Moscow will stop broadcasting operations of Deutsche Welle in Russia, stated the Russian Foreign Ministry on its official website on Thursday.

The ministry added that this was the ‘first stage’ of measures aimed at the German company, with further steps ‘to be published in a timely manner.’

“As part of the measures announced on February 2, in response to the unfriendly actions of the Federal Republic of Germany to ban satellite and other broadcasting of the German-language television channel RT DE, the Russian side intends to implement the first stage of response measures,” the website of the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry announced on Thursday the cancellation of accreditation of all staff at DW’s Russian bureau, as well as the halting of all broadcasts by the media outlet on the country’s territory.

The statement also noted that there would be measures to start a procedure to officially label DW as a ‘foreign agent,’ and to bar German officials and other individuals involved in the decision to ban RT’s broadcasting in Germany from entering Russia.

DW Director General Peter Limbourg said on Thursday that the Russian response was ‘completely incomprehensible and a total overreaction.’

“We have been made into a kind of pawn, which the media must often endure in autocracies. We formally protest against this absurd reaction by the Russian government and we will take legal action against the announced measures. Until we are officially presented with the measures, we will continue reporting from our office in Moscow. Even if we ultimately do have to close it, our reporting about Russia will remain unchanged. In fact, we would increase our coverage,” he added.
Russia decided to take retaliatory measures after the German Commission for Licensing and Supervision banned satellite and online broadcasts of the RT DE television channel on Tuesday.

The decision was motivated by the fact that the channel does not have the licence to broadcast in Germany, which is required in accordance with the current ‘State Law on the Modernisation of the Media Regulation in Germany.’
