Delegations from Russia, Turkey and Iran held a meeting in Geneva to discuss the sixth round of talks concluded by the recent Syrian Constitutional Committee meeting.
The negotiations took place in the permanent mission of the Russian Federation in Geneva. The Russian delegation was headed by the Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev. The Turkish team were led by Ambassador Selcuk Unal, the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s director general responsible for Syria, while Iran was represented by Ali Asghar Khaji, the senior advisor to the Iranian foreign minister for special political affairs. Later on the day, the three delegations were also expected to meet the UN special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen at Palais des Nations.
The recent round of talks on Syria’s new constitution kicked off on Monday and are expected to last until Friday. The participants will discuss constitutional principles and draft the text of the constitution.
The Syrian Constitutional Committee was formed in 2019, comprising of 150 men and women, with the government, the opposition and civil society each nominating 50 people. This larger group established the 45-member small body, consisting of 15 representatives from each of the three sectors. The previous fifth round of negotiations took place last January and ended without yielding any results.
