Supporters of pardoned former President Park Geun-hye were seen gathering outside Samsung Medical Centre, Seoul, on Thursday evening and early Friday morning, to celebrate the release from her prison sentence.
The week prior, Justice Minister Park Beom-kye had announced a government pardon for Park after she was convicted of corruption and abuse of power in 2017.
As part of the government announcement, a total of 3,094 were granted special amnesty.
The pardon came just three months away from Korea’s presidential election, prematurely ending Park’s 22-year prison sentence.

Translations:

SOT, Cho Won-jin, Our Republican Party President (Korean): “What I worry about is that this left-wing dictatorship, which has been destroying our country for the last five years, should not be able to extend its power.”

SOT, Sandra Yang, Supporter (English): “Our president, Park Geun-hye was imprisoned unlawfully over 4 year and 9 month by pro-China communists. So, though it’s too late, we are [happy] to see her back.”

SOT, Min Joong-hong, Taegueki National Movement (Korean): “President Park Geun-hye has returned to the free Republic of Korea. President Park Geun-hye was innocent and did not receive a penny. There was no abuse of authority.”
