Lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano has continued to increase the dimensions of the La Palma delta.

The solidified lava has created a delta that already reaches a total surface of almost 25 hectares (61 acres), as seen on Friday afternoon.

Clouds of white steam could be seen rising from the sea as lava reached the Atlantic Ocean.

The mixing of lava and water could trigger a chemical reaction that releases noxious gases. However, authorities say the cloud of water vapour and gases so far poses no health hazard.

Scientists have warned that the eruption, which began on 19 September, could continue for weeks or even months.

Volcanic activity on the Spanish island of La Palma has forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 people, and damaged 981 buildings, of which 855 have been totally destroyed.
