Dozens of residents of the village of Piornal, in Caceres, took part throwing turnips in the traditional Jarramplas festival, in honour of Saint Sebastian, on Thursday.
Footage shows the villagers throwing thousands of turnips at Jarramplas, a mythical character dressed in trousers and jacket, and from which multicoloured ribbons hang. The figure walks through the streets of the village while playing the drum and trying to protect himself from the impact of the turnips thrown by residents and tourists.
“It’s so important for us, we’re so proud of it, people are behaving well, they’re showing respect seeing the tourists here, seeing that the festival keeps growing, we’re so proud of it,” said a resident of Piornal.
The Jarramplas festival is back after being suspended in 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The celebration is held every 19 and 20 January.
