Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti had tough words for his team after their surprise loss to Getafe in Madrid on Sunday.
“I don’t think there is much to say about this match, other than the fact that we were still on vacation for one more day. We didn’t look like the team we were before Christmas. We were another team, less concentration, less commitment,” remarked Ancelotti.
Getafe took an early lead through Enes Unal after a mistake by Real Madrid’s Brazilian defender Eder Militao had gifted Unal a chance.
“What I’m telling you know is the same as what I told the players. We have to take responsibility for our actions, even the coach could have been on holiday today. So, we’ll take responsibility for this and move on,” Ancelotti went on to say.
Despite the loss, Real remain at the top of La Liga with an eight point lead over second-placed Sevilla, though the Andalusian side do have two games in hand to recover some of that gap.
The win for Getafe were a massive boost for the 16th-placed side as the three points were enough to push them outside the relegation zone.

SOT, Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid head coach (Spanish): “To be honest, we had a reaction ten minutes after the goal, then we were a bit more nervous, we lost the ball and the rhythm. We gave away the first goal to a player who usually stands out. I don’t think there is much to say about this match, other than the fact that we were still on vacation for one more day. We didn’t look like the team we were before Christmas. We were another team, less concentration, less commitment. Then, these are the sort of games where things happen. It’s clear that we didn’t deserve to lose, the draw would have been the fair result. We gave away a goal and it ends up being a loss that could have been a wake-up call. Today the team was on holiday.”
