State of Palestine: Teargas launched at rally against Israeli prison administration in Nablus

Protesters gathered in Nablus on Wednesday night to show solidarity with the escaped Palestinian prisoners as Israel defence forces intensified the search for the detainees.

Crowds also gathered in other major cities in Palestine. Activists burned tires, bins and threw stones at Israeli forces which was met with flash grenades and tear gas canisters.

On Monday, six Palestinian men escaped the maximum security Gilboa jail through a hole in the floor of a cell. Five of the six inmates are believed to be a part of the Islamic Jihad movement, with the other said to belong to an armed group associated with the Fatah party. The prisoners had all either been accused or convicted of planning attacks on Israel.

Mohamed Dwekat, Member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front discussed the intention of the protest: “We are our message to this Israeli occupation that we will not leave our prisoners inside prisons to face their fate alone, and we will protect them and we will prevail against their will and for them,” he said.
