A police officer has been killed and several protesters injured after clashes erupted between police guards and demonstrators near the Presidential Palace in Khartoum on Thursday.

Thousands of demonstrators could be seen marching through the Khartoum streets towards the Presidential Palace, before police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.

The police confirmed in a statement that Police Brigadier General Ali Brima Hammad was killed near to a national public health laboratory around the palace.

The demonstrators have demanded a return to full civilian rule in the country and affirmed their rejection of the military rule that is leading Sudan after the October 25 coup, led by Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok announced his resignation at the start of January.

Earlier, the United Nations announced the launch of preliminary political talks between the Sudanese parties to end the current crisis and agree on a sustainable path towards democracy.
