Geneva residents reacted on Thursday to the first day of the government’s lifting of most COVID restrictions.

“It should be ok and we shall recover our regular lives,” said Didier, a resident.

Footage showed the lakeside of the roughly 200,000-population city, as well as shopping areas and restaurants and cafes downtown. Some residents commented on the decision announced the day before by Swiss President Ignazio Cassis in Bern to lift most of the measures.

“It is a very good thing,” said Mohshine, a resident. “It was already about time,” he added.

As of Thursday, people in Switzerland no longer had to show a COVID-status certificate to enter bars, restaurants and other indoor spaces. Permits would no longer have to be applied at large events. Masks would no longer be required in schools, shops, and workplaces, but would remain necessary in public transport and healthcare facilities until the end of March.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Mohshine, Resident (French): “It is a very good thing. It was already about time. Now I hope that the easing of restrictions would extend to our countries and will happen faster and faster. And I hope that science will recover its place and that the politicians would back down and that we can live again a normal life but also that we will draw some conclusions, objectively and scientifically, to be able to fully understand what we have gone through. It is now that we are going to discover the mental sequels of what we have gone through.”

SOT, Didier, Owner of cafeteria (French): “Yes, the restrictions have had an impact on the number of clients and our incomes. So I hope that all this will encourage the clients to come back to us. I think it will be ok normally, working remotely will not be compulsory any more, so it should be okay and we shall recover our regular lives.”

SOT, Selim, Merchant (French): “People feel much better not having to wear a mask, they breathe better and my clients told me this morning that they even feel lighter. They smile more and maybe this will encourage them to consume a bit more.”
