Syria: Fmr opposition militants flock to amnesty point in Daraa

Former Syrian opposition militants headed to a ‘reconciliation centre’ in Daraa on Wednesday, in order to sign on to an amnesty agreement with the government.
Under a ceasefire deal reached with the help of Russian mediators, opposition members in the contested Dara al-Balad neighbourhood have been offered the chance to remain in the city if they hand over their arms and agree not to fight the Syrian military.
Syrian government forces, as well as Russian military police units, entered the neighbourhood on Wednesday and began setting up checkpoints, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
Daraa was formerly an opposition stronghold and was dubbed the ‘cradle of the revolution’ after being the scene of some of the first anti-government protests in March 2011.​
