Syria: Govt and Russian forces enter fmr opposition-held area of Daraa under truce

Syrian government forces entered a formerly opposition-held neighbourhood of Daraa, on Wednesday, accompanied by Russian military police, as part of a ceasefire deal mediated by Moscow.
Syrian and Russian flags were seen hoisted over ruined buildings in Daraa al-Balad, in the south of the city, which has been under siege since July.
Under the deal between the opposition and the government, militants who hand over their weapons and agree not to attack government forces will be allowed to remain in the city as part of an amnesty, while the Syrian army will also set up checkpoints in the contested neighbourhood.
Daraa was formerly an opposition stronghold and was dubbed the ‘cradle of the revolution’ after being the scene of some of the first anti-government protests in March 2011.​
