Syria: Geweran locals return after SDF regain control of prison in al-Hasakah

Dozens were seen returning to the Geweran neighbourhood in the vicinity of al-Hasakah prison on Sunday after the last remaining enclave of ISIS fighters reportedly surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Fighting between the SDF and Islamic State (IS) erupted following the Islamic State’s attack on Geweran prison that contained around 3,500 jailed ISIS fighters, forcing thousands to flee their neighbourhoods.

On Wednesday, the SDF announced that they had regained control over the prison.

“Thank god we are returning to our home, we ask God for peace, may God be with us, we were trapped under the shelling and bombing for five days, we can’t say anything but thank god for everything,” one of Geweran residents said.

Another resident added, “The coalition forces [US-led international coalition] were throwing bombs over our heads the whole night, I swear to you it’s been a couple of days, our children are scared.”

According to media reports, the overall death toll since the attempted IS prison break on January 20, has risen to seven civilians, 180 IS members and 73 members of the SDF. More than 100 escaped detainees have been reportedly captured. The SDF called for reinforcements to ensure protection for other prisons in the region.
The UN reported that approximately 45,000 people were displaced due to the fighting.

SOT, local (Arabic): “No one fled the Western side [of the neighbourhood], but people left the eastern side. In the western side, they raided homes and verified the identities of the people, but there is no stability, there is nothing.” ,

SOT, Local (Arabic): “There is no water or electricity, the contents of the house are ruined, the condition is dire, what can we do? This is their play, they performed it so that they would not leave.”

SOT, local (Arabic): “They throw them in the street and they say they are from Chechnya. We came here, they [SDF] said to us if the fighting breaks out in the evening, don’t go out of the house. Where do we go in the evening? There is no water, no electricity, no bread. People live on aid from organisations and good people”.

SOT, local (Arabic): “Thank god we are returning to our home, we ask God for peace, may God be with us, we were trapped under the shelling and bombing for five days, we can’t say anything but thank god for everything.”

SOT, local (Arabic): “Some go out and come back because of the food. They say they are searching for those [ISIS fighters] who did not go out, and we hear the sound of shelling, and people go out to buy vegetables and then come back.”

SOT, local (Arabic): “Some have returned to the area and some have not, and we are going back to see what our fate is.”
