Syria: Pedersen arrives in Damascus to discuss constitutional crisis with FM

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen arrived in Damascus on Saturday to discuss the possibility of continuing the Constitutional Committee meetings in Geneva.

According to media reports, Pederson will be visiting Syria for two days whereby he will meet Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Mikdad on Sunday.

Pederson had postponed his visit to Damascus, planned for November 30, due to the spread of the new COVID variant.

The UN envoy had earlier visited Damascus on September 11 before the start of the 6th round of the Constitutional Committee meetings, which ended on October 18 without reaching any agreement. Pederson had described the outcome of the talks as “disappointing”.
