Syria: UN Special Envoy Pederson meets FM, sees "step by step" solution to constitutional crisis

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen met with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Damascus on Sunday.
Pederson had arrived in Syria on Saturday to discuss the possibility of continuing the Constitutional Committee meetings in Geneva.
Pederson described what he called a step by step approach to solving the political crisis in Syria. “I see that there is a possibility to start to explore what I call a step by step approach where we put on the table you know steps that are is defined with precision that is very viable and that can hopefully start to build some trust and of course issues linked to the humanitarian situation, the economic challenges in Syria. We have to be an intricate part of that,” the Norwegian diplomat explained.
“I highlighted the importance of what I see as the possibilities of new openings also for the political process,” Pederson added.
The UN envoy had earlier visited Damascus on September 11 before the start of the 6th round of the Constitutional Committee meetings, which ended on October 18 without reaching any agreement. Pederson had described the outcome of the talks as “disappointing”.

SOT, Geir Otto Pedersen, UN Special Envoy to Syria: “You know I highlighted the importance what I see as the possibilities of new openings also for the political process, as you know I have been travelling extensively among some Arab countries and I have had in depth discussions with the Americans and with the Europeans and will also follow up with others and I see that there is a possibility to start to explore what I call a step by(sic) step approach where we put on the table you know steps that’s is defined with precision that is very verifiable and that can hopefully start to build some trust and of course issues linked to the humanitarian situation, the economic challenges in Syria. We have to be an intricate part of that.”
