Around 1,500 protesters gathered in a march against the government’s perceived poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite a ban on gatherings of 5 or more that came into effect the day prior, on Sunday in Bangkok.

Demonstrators could be seen throwing rocks at police lines, who in return fired water cannons, rubber bullets, and tear gas canisters at the crowd.

An effigy of Prime Minister Prayut Chan O Cha was also burnt at the scene, amid calls for his resignation.

The protest came as Bangkok entered its third lockdown, with July marking the highest number of daily COVID-19 infections and deaths in the country since the start of the pandemic.
