SOT, Armin Laschet, Former leader of CDU (German): “This 26th of September was a defeat. It is still an open wound-and the scar will remain.”

SOT, Armin Laschet, Former leader of CDU (German): “We will not allow the SPD’s inaction to be used to tell us we are down - make no mistake! The CDU has been strong with two-thirds of its members in this presidential election. Friedrich Merz has a huge backing, far across the different ideas and wings of our party and therefore - dress warmly, the CDU is coming back. I personally think that Friedrich Merz is exactly the right man at this time.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “This party conference sends out a powerful signal of new beginnings and renewal for the CDU. We have not lost our self-confidence - nor have we lost our civic responsibility for our country. Precisely because of the new government here in Berlin, Germany has a right to a CDU/CSU union that continues to serve the country, that provides answers to the pressing questions of our time, and that, as today’s opposition, first sets the standard for itself as to what tomorrow’s government should be like.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “It can be a long way until then. How long the road will really be depends not only and not only but also on us. If we argue, if we diverge in all directions, if we present an unclear picture, if we are not up to speed on the issues, then it may take a very long time. And even then, it is not certain that it will succeed at all.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “But if we quickly find our feet. If we are open to interesting discussions, if we simply take pleasure in actively participating in shaping our country, in shaping the European Union, and above all in improving the living conditions of the people in our country, then defeat can also be a new beginning, a new opportunity for us.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “In opposition, we do not need to consider coalition issues - we can say what we think and do what we say. The most important task for us will be to control this government, to challenge this chancellor.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “You, Mr. Schulz, said that whoever orders leadership from me will also get leadership. Our question is, what leadership do you mean? You want a general vaccination requirement and refuse to present your government’s draft bill to the German Bundestag. In Germany, the inflation rate and energy prices are higher than they have been for decades. People are afraid for their savings, for their pensions, for their incomes - they get no answer from you.”

SOT, Friedrich Merz, Current leader of CDU (German): “These days not only Germany and Europe, but the whole world is worried about peace in Europe. You have not yet been to Washington or Moscow, and the German and international public is not even aware of at least talking to the American President and the Russian President. All your actions, Chancellor, starting at the latest with Helmut Schmidt, who is obviously your great role model, would have shown leadership in this situation. You would have taken initiatives, you would have been in daily talks with your international partners. We are committed to political leadership and political responsibility.”

CDU politician Friedrich Merz attacked Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his application speech for the CDU leadership position at the digital party conference on Saturday in Berlin.

The most important task for the Union in the opposition is now to control the current ‘traffic light’ coalition and to challenge Scholz, according to Merz.

He also accused the Chancellor of being passive on important issues, especially in regard to the current tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

“In these days not only Germany and Europe but the whole world is worried about peace in Europe,” said Merz.

“You haven’t been to Washington or Moscow so far,” he continued and questioned the Chancellor’s leadership on questions of mandatory vaccination, an anti-COVID-19 measure suggested by his administration, and the economic situation in Germany.

On Thursday, the White House denied rumours that Scholz had turned down a meeting with US President Joe Biden on the Ukraine conflict. A meeting is now scheduled for February.
