Aerial images taken by the New Zealand defence force during a reconnaissance flight over Nomuka, Tonga, on Monday revealed the ‘extensive’ damage caused by Saturday’s volcano eruption and the subsequent tsunami.

The images show flooded areas and military personnel inside the Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K2 Orion aircraft.

New Zealand has also sent two naval ships carrying aid supplies to Tonga.

The underwater eruption was the biggest recorded anywhere on the planet in the last 30 years according to scientists, sending ash and steam up to 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) into the atmosphere.
The number of casualties remains unclear. Tonga is a country composed of 170 South Pacific islands with a population of 100,000 people.
