Tunisia: Tunis rally marks killing anniversary of opposition politician Belaid

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the centre of Tunis on Sunday to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the assassination of Shokry Belaid, a locally well-known politician who opposed the old Ben-Ali dictatorship and the Ennahda Movement government.
“The biggest concern in the last 10 years was the political assassinations that took place. The president today has to hold the killers accountable,” said Secretary-General of the People’s Movement Zuhair Maghzawi.
Adnan Hajji, an independent deputy who was also present, said that “Belaid was a human fighter with a history of fighting for change in Tunisia. He was unjustifiably assassinated because he led a project that was considered dangerous to political Islam.”
A secular opposition leader, Belaid was fatally shot outside his home in El Menzah on February 6, 2013.

SOT, Zuhair Maghzawi, Secretary-General of the People’s Movement (Arabic): “Today is a chance for 25 July to reveal the truth behind the political assassination after the Ennahda Movement was forced out of government. Unfortunately today we are commemorating the 9th anniversary of the martyr Belaid and after a few months we will commemorate the 9th anniversary as well for the martyr Brahmi. The biggest concern in the last 10 years was the political assassinations that took place. The president today has to hold the killers accountable.”

SOT, Adnan Hajji, Independent Deputy member (Arabic): “Comrade Belaid was a human fighter with a history of fighting for change in Tunisia. He was unjustifiably assassinated because he led a project that was considered dangerous to political Islam. We have a duty to commemorate our comrade Shokry Belaid’s anniversary and to demand all those who aided his assassination.”
