Thousands of mourners gathered in Istanbul on Wednesday to commemorate the life of journalist Hrant Dink, who was murdered in 2007.

Mourners held signs and listened to speeches, including those from the relatives of Dink. Some lay flowers in memory.

Dink was a prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist who was shot on the street in 2007. His assassination led to widespread protests at the time of his death, many which highlighted his ethnic identity.

While Dink’s juvenile murderer Ogun Samast was sentenced to 22 years in jail, many people believe those behind the assassination remain at large.

SOT, Nazim Ozgun Ipek, Mourner (Turkish): “I’m standing in a big crowd. I’m a child. That crowd is so quiet. Every once in a while, they say, ‘We are all Hrants, we are all Armenians.’ Even in years when I couldn’t say it, I thought that’s what it should be like to be one. The crowds, the noise, the humming, they used to scare me when I was a child. Now that I think about it, the rare crowd I feel the best in is always our January 19th crowd.”
