Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the US embassy in London on Saturday and marched around the city centre to protest against the conflict in Ethiopia.
A performance spearheading the march saw individuals seemingly representing the Tigray being beaten and tortured by individuals seemingly representing the country’s state military forces.
Protester Dawit urged the global community to help the Tigray people with actions rather than words, stating, “We need them to do more than just speaking.”
Tigrayan militants are now rapidly advancing on the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa stoking fears the city could fall.
The protest comes as the Federal Ethiopian government rejected recent proposals by western governments for a ceasefire.
SOT, Dawit, Protester: “We are here today as this past Thursday, November 4, marked a year since the Tigray genocide began. It has been 365 days of trying to fight and raise awareness for the people of Tigray, because they’ve been suffering under the current Ethiopian regime that’s been targeting them in many different ways, through extrajudicial killings, starvation, chemical weapons and aerial bombardments, the list goes on.”
SOT, Dawit, Protester: “We really need the global community to intervene and try and get aid to where Tigray needs it most. Right now we have 91 percent of the population that are living in famine conditions, so we have children that are dying from starvation. So we need them to at least intervene not with just their words, but with action, and try and get aid into the country. We need them to do more than just speaking.’
SOT, Marie, Protester: “We’re here to raise awareness about the atrocities taking place in Tigray. There’s been ongoing bombardment, and disconnection of services and aid for the past year, so we’re just trying to raise awareness and hopefully bring an end to the war.”
SOT, Marie, Protester: “The conflict definitely has been escalating, it’s just now that it’s gone beyond Tigray. Obviously a ceasefire would be ideal, and guarantee that all civilians in Ethiopia are safe, that would be the win-win.”
