UK: Londoners react to some COVID restrictions being lifted in England

Londoners shared their thoughts, on Thursday, as England lifts a number of COVID-19 restrictions in place to tackle the virus, including mandatory masks in some enclosed spaces and vaccine passports.

Resident Katherine was skeptical of the lifting of restrictions, commenting: “I think it’s too early yeah I think COVID numbers in some places are going up again so you know, I think we should wait and see.”

Others were more positive, as one resident of London named Dominic stated: “Well I think that it’s fantastic for London, it’s fantastic for the country, the restrictions and regulations are easing.”

Passengers on London’s transport network will still be required to wear masks, however, they will not be mandatory in schools and other spaces. The requirement to show evidence of vaccination has been scrapped in public venues.

According to official government data released on Tuesday, 64.4 percent of England’s population have been fully vaccinated.

SOT, Katherine, Resident: “I think it’s too early yeah I think COVID numbers in some places are going up again so you know, I think we should wait and see.”

SOT, Dominique, Resident: “For my personal opinion I think it’s really good because you can go out and enjoy certain things and social aspects of life, I feel like at the end of the day we’re going to have to live with it so it’s something that, them opening up I feel like it’s a good thing.”

SOT, Jodie, Resident: “Yeah I think it’s really good news finally I think you know, I think we’ve all been double jabbed, we’ve all taken precautions and it’s still there I mean, I just think it’s time to all start living again and getting back to some normality.”

SOT, Paul, Resident: “I think it’s just time we all moved on I mean there’s not many people I know who haven’t had COVID um, freedom to just live your life, two years has been too long to be under constant restriction and I just think it’s great for everybody to try and rebuild their lives back to what they were before.”

SOT, Dominic, Resident: “Well I think that it’s fantastic for London, it’s fantastic for the country, the restrictions and regulations are easing. There’s no question that the government has done a good job in relation to the vaccination program and we are now benefiting as a public to reap the benefits of that vaccination program. There’s obviously some challenges still out there, we are going to have to remain respectful and confident that there still is a virus in the community but I think again, in the past six months certainly since the summer of 2021 a lot of population have begun to sort of adapt to that and begin to understand and respect it, live with it and I think that its generally fantastic news that we are now returning to a greater degree of normality.”
