Ukraine: Anti-vaccination rally blocks traffic in Kiev amid rising Covid cases

Hundreds of protesters marched in Kiev on Wednesday in a rally against compulsory vaccinations and other restrictive measures imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The anti-vaxxers blocked traffic in the streets near the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers, chanting slogans such as “Stop Genocide”, “Human Rights Above All”, and called for their constitutional rights to be respected. The protesters also collected signatures against compulsory vaccination.

Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Lyashko said in a press conference that such calls are “a mockery of our medics and of the families who, unfortunately, have lost their relatives to COVID-19”.

Fifteen regions of Ukraine, including Kiev, are in the so-called ‘red’ zone of COVID-19 cases. Cafes, restaurants, shopping centres, non-food shops, and most educational institutions are closed in the regions.

Earlier, the Ukrainian government ruled that officials and education workers must be vaccinated against COVID-19 starting from November 8 or face suspension.

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the country recorded 23,393 new COVID-19 cases and 720 coronavirus-related deaths on November 3.
