Residents of Donetsk, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People Republic’s capital, shared their experiences following shelling in the area on Thursday.

Lidia, a resident of Donetsk, said that “Everyone was scared. We got used to [it], of course, but still. Where is it flying? I wish I knew where [the shells] were flying”.

Another Donetsk local, Tatiana, said that following the shelling “Fragments then flew through the village, through the yards, over the roofs, over the fences”.

According to DPR officials, Ukrainian forces allegedly shelled areas north-west of Donetsk, north-west of Gorlovka, the Petrovskoe-Bogdanovka disengagement area, as well as the south of the self-proclaimed republic.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has confirmed that there were “multiple shelling incidents” across the frontline in the Donbass region on Thursday.

The Ukrainian government and DPR authorities have accused each other of being responsible for the shelling on Thursday. “The situation on the line of contact has sharply escalated. The enemy is making attempts to unleash active hostilities,” self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic officials stated on their Telegram channel.

Ukraine denied the accusations, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeting in response: “We call on all partners to swiftly condemn this severe violation of Minsk agreements by Russia amid an already tense security situation.”

On Wednesday, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov spoke of the probability of Ukraine seeking a military solution, stating “The attention of our interlocutors is drawn to the fact that a military operation and an attempt to resolve problems with the use of force in the southeast are quite real,” and that the “probability is high and real.”

SOT, Irina, Donetsk resident (Russian): “In the morning we woke up from strong explosions. They were loud. It fell somewhere beyond [inaudible]. It was heavy today. The shelling was heavy. There were mortars, small arms, the battle [was] heavy. It was a heavy fight. The windows were shuddering. They shuddered from the explosions. We were already thinking about going back to the basement. We have already dismantled our basements, we have not taken refuge in them for a long time. But already decided to start again.”

SOT Lidia, Donetsk resident (Russian): “I think everyone was scared. We got used to [it], of course, but still. Where is it flying? I wish I knew where [the shells] were flying to.”

SOT, Tatiana, Donetsk resident (Russian): “Well, there were shots, I was just passing by, there was one shot. It was flying this way, here, it was flying this way. Once and then another. And the fragments then flew through the village, through the yards, over the roofs, over the fences.”
