Ukraine: Kiev sees no grounds for "full-scale" Russian invasion - Security Council secretary

Restrictions: Mandatory credit: Office of the President of Ukraine

Ukraine is not planning an offensive into Donbas or neighbouring countries, Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) Secretary Aleksey Danilov said at a post-session briefing on Monday.

The politician added that Ukraine continued to receive planes with military assistance from Western countries.The secretary also reported that Kiev had no grounds to claim that it was preparing a full-scale offensive against Ukraine. The Security Council secretary said that an attack on the country was “impossible even physically” and called on the media to lower the tension around the security situation.

Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations by the US and its allies that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine.

SOT, Vladimir Zelensky, President of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “The matter is in control, there is no cause for panic. At the meeting, first of all, we discussed the situation in the East of our country. We are working for the sake of a complete de-escalation of the situation and a peaceful settlement of the conflict. We know about everything, we are ready for everything, we always hope for the best and we do absolutely everything for it.”

SOT, Alexey Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “Recently, a lot of news events are occurring all over the country, a lot of military-themed writing has been done by the media. I would like to ask all of you, friends and colleagues, to turn the current heat down a bit. The situation is clear for us; there is no reason to panic right now. I implore everyone to stay calm, because when some of the mayors, for example Mr. [Kyiv Mayor Vitaly] Klitschko decides to convene a meeting of mayors on the 28th to decide how they will defend our country. For such decisions, we have the Armed Forces, which are able to fight back if necessary. The situation is completely under control, there is nothing new for us.”

SOT, Alexey Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “As of today, we have information about three embassies. Forty-nine countries aren’t part of these discussions. Each country determines for itself how citizens who are in our country should behave. The only thing we can say - there was a great wave of misinformation about the fact that employees of the direct institutions of the Russian Federation are leaving our country en masse; we do not see this. Let me stress this once again: as of today, we do not see any active departure from our country by members of diplomatic embassies.”

I stress that these are weapons for protection, we are not going to attack anyone, but this is our country, and we are not going to give it up. Many states want to help us now. I cannot even give you a list of all the countries. Many countries have taken these obligations nowadays: to help us defend against aggression by the Russian Federation, intense aggression. I stress that it began in 2014, and we state that. We are very pleased that the world finally paid attention to the fact of this aggression, and today [we are being helped] not only by the UK, not only by the US, but also by a list of countries, mainly NATO member states. [They are] ready to help us, if necessary, with whatever it takes to ensure that our sovereignty, our country, is protected.”

SOT, Alexey Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “As of today, there is no reason to claim a full-scale attack on our country. It is not even physically possible. Is there any data on the movement of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on Russian territory? Yes, there are, we register it, but it is not uncommon. Perhaps it is rare for our foreign partners to finally see that there are troops there, that they are moving in a certain way. This situation began on 30 October with a publication in the Washington Post. I want to point out that on the very day I was approached by representatives of this respected newspaper with information about allegedly large additional accumulations [of troops] on our borders. I stress again, on 30 October. I responded, that we recorded, that we didn’t see anything. Moreover, we now have a lot of information that is not confirmed by our intelligence officers.”
