Hundreds of entrepreneurs marched on Constitution Square, in front of the Verkhovna Rada, in Kiev, against a tax increase and the requirement for small businesses to have cash registers, on Wednesday.

Activists were seen speaking on stage, shouting slogans and holding flags and posters calling for help for entrepreneurs. The protesters then lit red flares.

According to local reports, police blocked traffic on several streets in the city’s government quarter.

Ukrainian entrepreneurs began rallying in November 2020 and, from 15 December, declared their protest indefinite. They initially opposed restrictions because of the coronavirus and later demanded the repeal of a number of tax laws, including those requiring small business owners to have cash registers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed laws to postpone the enactment of cash registers for small businesses until 1 January 2022. In addition, the head of state initiated the establishment of a coordination council to address the problems of microbusinesses.
