Kiev’s residents attended a ‘March for Ukraine’s Unity’ on Saturday amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to a state media report, approximately 1,500 people attended the march, which went from Shevchenko Park to Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square, with flags, posters and flares.
At the end of the march participants sang the national anthem. There were no reports of detentions.
In recent developments, a number of foreign embassies in Kiev issued warnings to their respective citizens, citing concerns of potential armed conflict in the country.
According to the latest guidance published by the UK’s government on Saturday, British nationals have been instructed to “leave now while commercial means are still available” amid an increased “threat of military action” on Ukraine’s borders with Russia.
Similarly, the US Department of State also published an updated travel advisory guidance on the same day, classifying Ukraine in their ‘Level 4: Do Not Travel’ category. The advisory warns of “increased threats of military action and COVID-19” and urges US nationals to “depart immediately via commercial or private means.”
In a published announcement on Saturday, following a call between Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden on the subject of the ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the White House warned that Biden was “clear” that a “further invasion of Ukraine” by Russia would be responded to “decisively” with “swift and severe costs” for Moscow.
