Ukraine: Zelensky says Kiev shows patience with Donbass conflict settlement

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasised Ukraine’s patience in approaching the tensions in Donbass during a press conference held with his French counterpart in Kiev on Tuesday.

“Ukraine is very patient, because [patience] is wisdom. I think it is important not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. And it is very important for Russians. Because escalation, escalation from the other side depends on our patience,” commented Zelensky.

“We are defending our country, we are on our territory,” added Zelensky.

Zelensky also expressed his gratitude to the French President Emmanuel Macron for the allocation of €1.2 billion ($1.37bn, £1.01bn) in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

“This will really help us stabilise our economy. We are already doing well, but this is a powerful step for the economic sustainability of Ukraine,” said Zelensky

For his part, Macron announced a new set of Normandy talks, which will take place in Berlin on February 10.

Macron arrived in Kiev on Tuesday for talks with Ukraine’s leadership, just a day after visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

As for the Minsk agreements and this: ‘Like it, dislike it, bear with it, my beauty’. There are certainly things here that we cannot argue with the Russian president. Ukraine is indeed beautiful. But as for ‘mine’ - it is a little too much. By the way, you didn’t sit there after dinner, did you have a rest? And about ‘bear with it, my beauty’. Ukraine is very patient, because [patience] is wisdom. I think it is important not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. And it is very important for Russians. Because escalation, escalation from the other side depends on our patience. We are defending our country, we are on our territory. We show our patience during provocations, when we do not respond to them and behave in a very proper way. So, in my mind, patience is wisdom.”

SOT, Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian President (Ukrainian): “[The] French President and I share vision on current security threats and challenges for Ukraine, Europe and the world as a whole. These (threats and challenges) require unity and new proactive approaches for European leadership. We will continue to work together on de-occupation of Ukrainian part. Today, Ukraine’s security and economic support from partners, strengthening of its resilience and defence capabilities is beneficial to the whole region and, I am sure, to all European Union countries. Security support is as important as economic one. So, we really appreciate such a step of solidarity with other states, a powerful step on the part of Emmanuel, on the part of France - the allocation of €1.2 billion in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. This will really help us stabilise our economy. We are already doing well, but this is a powerful step for the economic sustainability of Ukraine”
