Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke at a press conference on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday. During the event, the diplomat said that the United States and other NATO countries had withdrawn troops from Afghanistan without “any consideration of the consequences”.

Earlier Sergei Lavrov arrived in New York City. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the Russian delegation was also joined by the Russian ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov and Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

The Russian foreign minister already managed to meet with several world politicians, including NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad, British Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Security Policy Josep Borrell on the UN General Assembly sidelines.

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Unfortunately, the hasty withdrawal, let’s call it that, of troops from the United States and other NATO countries was carried out without any thought of the consequences, and the consequences, as you know, are that there are a lot of weapons left in Afghanistan. Apparently, we all need to make sure that these weapons are not used for unconstructive purposes.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “We do not accept attempts to restrict or discriminate against vaccines that are not registered in the US but have repeatedly proven to be effective. This also applies to Sputnik V. We already have a number of EU countries, Hungary and Slovakia, for example, that have registered our vaccines, this is an example for the rest of the EU and NATO members as well.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “President Putin and Biden touched on this issue in Geneva, among other topics, and agreed that the relevant security services in charge of this area, both in our country and in Washington, would talk about agreeing on some generally acceptable options. So far, we have not come to any option. The Americans are only interested in taking their citizens and are not very serious about our wishes. They are interested in Whelan, who is convicted of espionage, who was caught red-handed. This is a crime that cannot be compared to the reasons why Yaroshenko and Bout have been incarcerated for more than twenty years.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “For our western camp, for their western camp, of course, these are big issues that they have to deal with. We are not going to interfere in these matters, but the consequences of what is happening there can of course be felt by us. This may affect our relations with the European Union as well, it may cause interest in the European Union to cooperate with us, using the obvious geopolitical and geostrategic advantages of being on one huge continent. All the more so as the centre of global development is shifting to the Asian region.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The Malian authorities assessed their own capabilities, their own abilities, as insufficient without external support. As external support is dwindling from those who have pledged there to help eradicate terrorism, they have turned to a private Russian military company. We have nothing to do with this, this activity is on a legitimate basis and concerns the relationship between the host government, which is recognised by all as a legitimate entity, on the one hand, and those who offer services through foreign specialists.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “About recognising or not recognising the elections, the recommendations of the European Parliament, we have not heard any assessment from the European Union as such, because the European Parliament is not a structure that determines EU policy.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The West is just hanging on to this mechanism, which is not agreed with Damascus, which also goes against international humanitarian law, we have good reason to believe that there is some hidden agenda here. No information is given to us about what is being delivered to the Edlib zone in this gloom, the UN swears they are inspecting every truck, but there is no way to verify it.”

SOT, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Kiev, led by President [Volodymyr] Zelensky, has shamefully failed in its obligations under the Minsk agreements to overcome the internal Ukrainian conflict in the east of this country. The obvious things, laws are passed that essentially prohibit granting status to the south-east of Ukraine, as required by the Minsk agreements.”
