US President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador held a bilateral meeting in Washington’s Casablanca Oval Office on Thursday ahead of their first face-to-face meeting with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau at the first joint summit between the leaders of the three countries in five years.
Biden noted that there was no longer a “good neighbour policy,” but that Mexico and the US were now “equal countries.”
“I think it’s a different and emerging relationship that is born out of mutual respect,” he added, stressing that the two countries will work together on issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing for an inclusive economic recovery and migration.
For his part, Obrador thanked his counterpart for the reception during the meeting, where he said he was very satisfied with the meeting.
“Biden] wants the treatment to be respectful and between equals, he told me from the first time we spoke on the phone, as president of the US, he told me that they were not going to see us as a backyard, which we appreciate, because that way we don’t need to be reaffirming our principles of independence and sovereignty,” AMLO stated.
The Mexican president then focused on the immigration issue to “regularise the migratory situation of 11 million people,” he said, “hoping for the support of Congress, millions of Mexican emigrants who live and work honestly in the US”.
