USA: Hundreds of activists rally in DC for voting rights

Hundreds of activists rallied in Washington DC, on Saturday, to protest for voting rights protections and an end to the filibuster.

The demonstrators held signs calling for new laws, denouncing Democratic and Republican lawmakers opposed to ending the filibuster which would enable the passing of the Freedom to Vote act.

Alma Couverthie, the national organising director for the League of Women Voters explained the purpose behind the protest, saying, “we are pressuring both the Senate and the White House to do everything in their power to pass For The People Act, to pass a freedom to vote act and to support statehood for DC.”

The ‘Freedom To Vote act’ was introduced after the earlier ‘For the People Act’ failed to pass last June when Senator Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat from West Virginia, refused to back it during a Senate vote.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, Republican state lawmakers have introduced over 360 bills to restrict access to voting since Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election, many of which contain measures that disproportionately affect poor and minority voters who typically lean towards the Democratic Party.
