USA: Jesse Jackson among those arrested in Capitol rally for voting rights

Activists were seen being arrested during a protest in defence of voting rights at the Capitol, Washington DC on Monday.

Protesters held signs calling for the protection of the freedom to vote, as well as chanting slogans, with Capitol police arresting and escorting away many in attendance.

Amongst those present at the rally were leader of the Poor People’s Campaign Rev. Dr. William Barber II and political activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, both of whom were arrested.

“I am back in Washington, DC to raise my voice. Raise my voice because I am an immigrant, I am a black woman living in the South,” said demonstrator Tembi Hove from the Unite Here hospitality workers union. “I know what it’s like to have to fight for my rights, my dignity and my respect. And I refuse to let them be taken away from me.”

The attendees gathered to demand Congress pass federal voting rights legislation as well as abolish the filibuster rule. The protest was held in the wake of a bill passed by the Texas Senate that would change some of voting rules, suggesting elimination of drive-thru and 24-hour early voting. The bill remains stalled and has not yet passed the Texas House.

Let me tell you this my brothers and my sisters, we are in the crisis of unusual proportions, a civilisation crisis. Democracy is under attack around the world, the world is looking at us in tension. Secondly, the health crisis is upon us and the temperature is rising.”
