Voters headed to polling stations in Venezuela’s Barinas state, on Sunday, for a repetition of an election for governor held last November.
Voters had to show vaccination documents in order to enter the polling stations and cast their votes, as seen at the Liceo Daniel Florencio O’Leary polling station in Barinas.
Nasser Askoul, one voter, said “the process was really fast, I invite all Barinese to make use of this right. This is a historic moment for all of Barinas and I believe that we should all come to vote and take advantage of the moment.”
Barinas state has typically been a stronghold for the ruling Socialist party and the birthplace of former President Hugo Chavez.
Local and regional elections held last November however saw the Chavez family loose for the first time in two decades.
The re-run has been held as Venezuela’s Supreme Court disqualified candidate Freddy Superlano. Argenis Chavez, the candidate for the ruling party, has also pulled out of the re-run leaving former minister Jorge Arreaza competing against Sergio Garrido, the new opposition candidate.
SOT, Cesar Rangel, Voter (Spanish): “As an educator, I want to call on the people of Barinas to go out and vote, that may end abstention. It is a right that we have enshrined in our constitution and we must enforce it, vote for the opposition or for the government, or for whoever, but you have to vote.”
SOT, Franci Artahona, Polling station coordinator (Spanish): “Truly the process has been quite fluid, we have approximately 30 percent of voters who have made their right to vote and without any news they have truly been as citizens in full peace and full function of the entire electoral process.”
SOT, Nasser Askoul, Voter (Spanish): “I arrived at 11.10 minutes and at 11.35 I was already voting. The process was really fast, I invite all Barinese to make use of this right. This is a historic moment for all of Barinas and I believe that we should all come to vote and take advantage of the moment.”
