Head of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) office in Belarus, Mahim Orazmukhammedova, visited a temporary accommodation facility near the Bruzgi checkpoint on the Belarusian-Polish border, Saturday.
During her visit, the representative said that the migration crisis can only be resolved through the joint efforts of Belarus and neighbouring countries.
According to Governor of the Grodno Region, Vladimir Karanik, at the meeting of the operational headquarters on Saturday, the issues of accommodation of migrants in the logistics centre were resolved. SOT, Mahim Orazmukhammedova, Head of Belarus office of International Organisation for Migration (Russian): “Countries must respect and comply with international law regarding migrants and refugees. All signatory countries of these agreements and international protocols and conventions, just have to respect [international law]. And we appeal for a joint solution.”
SOT, Vladimir Karanik, Governor of Grodno region (Russian): “Let’s start with the fact that there was a meeting of the operational headquarters in the camp on the question of compliance with safety measures. We decided, if there were any problems with food or basic sustenance, there are no unresolved issues at the moment. Moreover, concerning [the situation] at the border: the consequences of, shall we say, the spontaneous events have been cleaned up. At the moment the camp has been almost returned to its original state. Maybe somewhere else the fences will continue to be restored.”
SOT, Vladimir Karanik, Governor of Grodno region (Russian): “This issue was also discussed at the operational headquarters, I think that in the near future the issue will be resolved. Here will be, including the point of pharmacy, now we are discussing the most demanded medicines to provide people with everything needed. Medicine is not food, and uncontrolled intake can lead to negative consequences. So we’re going to understand how we’re going to establish a supply, and at the same time, we’re going to establish control over its usage. But I think in a day or two the issue of medication will also be resolved.”
SOT, Vladimir Karanik, Governor of Grodno region (Russian): “Yesterday we expanded areas to accommodate these poor people. This step allowed not only to put people from the open-air camp under the roof but also to provide freer accommodation with evacuation passages and several common areas where children can play and people can walk in order not to create overcrowding.”
SOT, Vadim Sinyavsky, Minister of Emergency Situations of Belarus (Russian): “What can we say? This is a human tragedy, it is clear. People got literally stacked in a situation, and the way out must be found and found by all reasonable people involved in solving this migration crisis. Our main task today is to ensure the safety of people staying here. The logistics centre itself is not suitable for people staying here. We have to provide basic human needs so that people can have access to them. And most importantly - to ensure safety, that is the most important thing.”
SOT, Vadim Sinyavsky, Minister of Emergency Situations of Belarus (Russian): “You know, we lived in a peaceful country, and we taught our personnel, our units, the internal affairs authorities, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, army units, border guards, we practiced it all in classes, during manoeuvres, in command and staff training exercises. None could even predict that so many refugees would come to our country and continue moving to the advanced countries of the European Union. However, unfortunately, what happened today, of course, is a non-standard, abnormal situation that everyone has to deal with. And first of all, the authorities, the administration, all the security forces involved, who are ensuring the safe stay of people here today, everyone is coping, everyone is working well.”
