'We recognize this will take time' - Blinken on strain with France over submarine contract

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said mending the relationship with France after the cancelled submarine contract will take time, during a press briefing on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Thursday.

“We recognise this will take time and hard work and will be demonstrated not only in words, but in deeds. And I’m committed to working closely with minister Le Drian on this crucial effort,” Blinken said, adding: “The European Union strategy that that came out on the Indo-Pacific a few days ago, a strategy in which France played a leading role in developing is one that we very, very strongly welcome.”

The newly unveiled AUKUS deal, which was negotiated behind France’s back, will see the United States and United Kingdom supply Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, supplanting a contract for Australia to purchase diesel-powered submarines from France. The announcement led to a diplomatic row between Paris and Washington.
