Woman gives dog with rare birth defect a second chance at life

I drove all the way from California to Houston to adopt this little dog who I had never met before, but was already madly in love with. Benjamin has a progressive genetic disorder called mucopolysaccharidosis which causes stunted growth and deformities.

When we got home, he adapted very, very quickly. He was able to actually crawl around. He actually started going, hopping in and out of his bed, which I had never seen him do before, which I thought was pretty amazing.

Even though this is my third dog with MPS, it is very emotionally hard and draining because Benji is very special and very delicate.

We kind of have to go by his symptoms and kind of just manage it by that. He shows me my ability that I’m able to push myself through this. If he’s able to get through it, I’m able to get through it with him too. Despite all of Benji’s disabilities and his health issues, he’s still a really happy dog. Life with Benji has literally been a blessing.
