Yemen: Protesters denounce local currency collapse and deteriorating living conditions in Taiz

Hundreds took to the streets of Taiz on Saturday to protest the collapse of the local currency and denounce the deteriorating economic and living conditions.

Protesters were seen performing a symbolic funeral for a bag of wheat after food prices rose to record levels and the cost of a pack of flour reached 50 thousand riyals.

“We all suffer from hunger, poverty, and pain. We demand the government, who are in Riyadh, and we ask the President of the Republic to look at us and wake up,” said one of the protesters.

After years of war between a Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis, 80 percent of the Yemeni population faces starvation and disease, described by the United Nations as the ‘largest humanitarian crisis in the world.’

Earlier this year, a UN appeal for aid to Yemen raised $1.7 billion (€​1.4 billion).

All basic needs, including gas, electricity and wheat, are not available, and the currency has significantly collapsed. The [Saudi-led] Coalition is the main responsible for the restoration of legitimacy, which means restoring peace and stability, supporting the local currency, and return of government to the capital Sana’a.”

SOT, Protestor (Arabic): “We are here to say to the government that if you cannot fulfill your religious and humanitarian responsibilities, then they shall leave. The city of Taiz is completely closed and besieged from all directions, we cannot even make our living. You want us to eat each other, but we will not surrender and shall hold out at all costs.”
