Kabul residents formed long queues at the bakeries on Wednesday, with millions of Afghans facing starvation as winter arrives.
The price of a 200-gram loaf of bread has increased by 100 percent to from 10 to 20 Afghanis (€0.16; $0.18) under the Taliban rule.
“We come here because one loaf or three loaves of bread helps us to take the bread to our children. We have to stand in front of the bakery, we sit here from morning to evening for three loaves of bread,” said local resident Pekay.
“Our children are hungry at home, the rent of our house is high, we have such life problems that we go out in the morning and go home at 8 pm,” she added.
“Hundreds of people including women, children come to the bakery daily and beg for bread, people are under poverty. Price has reached its peak,” baker Shapoor explained.
United Nations estimates at least half of Afghanistan’s population, 23 million people, will be affected by the food shortage this winter.
