The black and white Taliban flag and the emblem of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan have been painted on the exterior walls of the former US embassy building in Kabul, as seen on Wednesday.
Sparlai, a vendor working at the entrance of the building, said, “I am selling flags here. Before, I was selling Afghanistan national flags, so now the Taliban came and removed those flags as they selected this white flag, which is a logo of the Islamic Emirate.”
The murals outside the embassy previously bore murals such as a portrait of George Floyd and Tetsu Nakamura, a Japanese aid worker killed in 2019. As the Taliban consolidate their power, the murals are renewed with slogans energizing their recent victory.
“Before there were pictures of the vaccines, there were pictures of the martyrs, which made people sad when people looked at them every time,” commented an anonymous resident.
US diplomats left the embassy for offices in Doha, Qatar, after the Afghan capital fell to the Taliban on August 15.

SOT, Sparlai, Flag vendor (Dari): “I am selling flags here. Before I was selling Afghanistan national flags, so now the Taliban came and removed those flags as they selected this white flag, which has a logo of the Islamic Emirate. Now I am selling these flags and it is good, it helps me earn an income.”

SOT, Sparlai, Flag vendor (Dari): “The Islamic Emirate painted it, they removed those flags and painted the flag of the Islamic Emirate.”

SOT, Anonymous, Resident (Dari): “The US embassy was here, and now this place has been improved, brightened, the streets are open, the boundary walls were removed, the people can move very easily and comfortably. Before there was a lot of traffic and the vehicles could not get out even for hours.”

SOT, Anonymous, Resident (Dari): “Before there were pictures of the vaccines, there were pictures of the martyrs, which made people sad when people looked at them every time. It’s good that now we see everywhere the words of La Ilaha Ilallah Mohammad Rasool Lillah (There is no anyone to worship, but just Allah/God and Mohammad is his prophet).”

SOT, Anonymous, Resident (Dari): “Regarding the Taliban, I am very happy that our women observed the veil or hijab, and my private suggestion as a mother, I demand from this government to decrease food rates, and our boys be appointed to jobs. Until we survive poverty, including our children, our country must be secured.”
