Austria: Protesters hold demo in Vienna following Kurz's resignation announcement

Protesters in Vienna gathered in front of the chancellery building on Saturday as Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation as chancellor over corruption allegations.

“The guy should no longer appear in public as a politician,” one protester said.

The pressure was mounting on Kurz to resign after prosecutors launched an investigation into the corruption charges, with raids being conducted across a number of locations in Austria last Wednesday.

Kurz’s government coalition partners from the Green party expressed disapproval of the chancellor following the launch of the investigation and have since called on the Austrian People’s Party (OVP) to announce his replacement.

SOT, Protester (German): “Today is a public holiday. Now the matter is off the table and the guy should no longer appear in public as a politician.”

SOT, Protester (German): “It is absolutely not enough and today is not a holiday. The moral image does not go away with Kurz, it is now anchored in the entire OVP. The whole OVP is undermined, as you can see from the chats where government work was impacted. In my opinion, the whole OVP government must resign.”

SOT, Protester (German): “As we have heard, he is not stepping down as party chairman. As it looks like the turquoise / green federal government is likely to remain in office. We demand that the whole turquoise system step down, the one that is at least accused of being corrupt, looking at these very clear chats that have been published. Therefore we stand there spontaneously and hope that more people will come.”
