Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation in a press conference in Vienna on Saturday.

“In this difficult time it should never be about personal or party interests, or political tactics, as my country is more important to me than my person. And what is needed now are stable conditions. Therefore, in order to resolve the stalemate, I would like to make way to avoid chaos and ensure stability,” Kurz said, adding that he has proposed that foreign minister Alexander Schallenberg be his replacement.

Pressure was mounting on Kurz to resign after prosecutors launched an investigation into corruption allegations, with raids conducted across a number of locations on Wednesday.

Kurz’s government coalition partners from the Green party expressed disapproval for the chancellor following the launch of the investigation and have invited the Austrian People’s Party to announce his replacement.
