NATO is considering deploying a longer-term presence in eastern Europe, announced NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a press conference with Andrzej Duda, President of Poland, in Brussels on Monday.

“We are considering more longer-term adjustments to our posture, our presence in the Eastern part of the alliance. No final decision has been made on that but there is a process now going on within NATO,” said Stoltenberg.

Currently, NATO does not have troops permanently stationed in eastern Europe.

Stoltenberg also commented on the increase in troops as a consequence of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, stating that NATO allies have ‘stepped up’ their military presence in the region.

Tensions remain high over Russia’s military build-up on the border with Ukraine.

In January, Russia’s Foreign Ministry published draft security proposals between Moscow and Washington on ensuring the security of Russia and NATO member states. Consultations on these issues were held in early February in Geneva, Brussels, and Vienna.

Firstly, NATO absolutely cannot back down. It is a defensive alliance and has never shown aggression towards Russia in the course of recent years. It was always an alliance of defence.
