Volunteers have been helping at a Civil Mediation centre in Houjing village, Xiamen, on Wednesday, after being converted into a COVID-19 test point, amid a surge in the Delta variant.

Residents flocked to the centre to register for rapid COVID-19 tests, just two days after Beijing imposed a city-wide lockdown. 165 total cases of the disease were registered in the Fujian province by Wednesday.

Local resident and centre volunteer Mr Lin said that 2,000 villagers had been tested so far, and that the process of mass testing was going ‘quite smoothly.’

The Delta outbreak, first reported a week prior, has led to travel limitations for Xiamen and Quanzhou residents, school and business closures. Temporary mass COVID testing facilities have been opened to curb the spread.
