China: FM urges West not to leave responsibility of Afghanistan to neighbouring countries

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin criticised countries for withdrawing from Afghanistan without taking enough care regarding refugees beforehand. Wang referred to the situation as a ‘huge disaster, during Friday’s press conference in Beijing.

Wang expressed China’s wishes to avoid a heavy fallout following the withdrawal of western troops from Afghanistan, so as to avoid “civil wars or humanitarian disasters” and “mass numbers of refugees.”

“At the same time, we also want to point out that the relevant countries should be responsible for what they have done in the past 20 years. They should not leave Afghanistan after a huge disaster and transfer the responsibility to Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries and the international community,” Wang continued, calling on the international community to “defend the victorious outcomes of WWII” in upholding world justice and restoring peace.

On Monday, the Pentagon announced that the US had officially completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan after engaging in a war that lasted 20 years.

We believe that the top priority is to promote a ‘soft landing’ of the situation in Afghanistan, so that no new civil wars or humanitarian disasters will happen there, and to avoid unnecessary casualties and mass numbers of refugees. At the same time, we also want to point out that the relevant countries should be responsible for what they have done in the past 20 years. The Chinese and Russian people will not allow this, nor will the peace-loving people of the whole world. We will join hands with all countries in the world to firmly reject wrong and regressive behaviour, defend the victorious outcomes of WWII and international fairness and justice, uphold the UN-centred international system and international order, based on international law, as well as safeguard world peace and tranquility.”

SOT, Wang Wenbin, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Mandarin): “We hope that the US can view China and China-US relations in an objective and rational manner, with the goal of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, and promote China-US coordination and cooperation in areas such as climate change to achieve more results.
