China: US must 'stop interfering in China's internal affairs' in Hong Kong - MOFA spox

Spokesperson of China MOFA Zhao Lijian called on the US to “stop interfering in China’s internal affairs” as he commented on the closure of a Hong Kong media outlet and several arrests, during a press conference held in Beijing on Thursday.

“Hong Kong police have arrested individuals suspected of conspiring to launch and inciting publications and frozen their relevant assets. This is a necessary and legitimate move to safeguard the legal system of Hong Kong and maintain social order, and has nothing to do with freedom of the press and speech,” Zhao explained.

He went on to add “Under the guise of the so-called freedom of the press, some external forces have made irresponsible remarks about the law enforcement of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in accordance with the law, completely subverting black and white and confusing the public.”

Zhao also commented on the US sanctions against Chinese officials from the Liaison Office of the CPC Central Committee in Hong Kong.

“We once again urge the United States to lift the so-called sanctions against Chinese personnel, stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and interfere in China’s internal affairs.” He added that “China will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard national interests and dignity in accordance with the law.”
