The crisis between the Gulf states and Lebanon “could have been contained,” the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki said after meeting with President Michel Aoun in Baabda on Monday.

The crisis was triggered by comments from Lebanon’s information minister criticising the Saudi-led involvement in the Yemen conflict.

“This crisis could have been avoided from the beginning, it could have been contained, this is my opinion. I think that it is clear to everyone, that this matter could have been resolved from the beginning,” Zaki said.

“We don’t want things to get more complicated, as it has already become more complicated, when it comes to the relationship between Lebanon and the Gulf states. We do not want this situation to continue,” he added.

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “I heard from His Excellency (Prime Minister Najib Mikati) an important and very positive position regarding the relationship between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, which is given a great extent of care not only by him, as prime minister of Lebanon, but also by the country which is committed to establishing healthy, good and positive relations with all the Arab brothers and the Arab surrounding of Lebanon, and certainly at the forefront of that with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “We regard this visit as an initiative to put this crisis in its right place, and to communicate with Lebanon and the leaders of Lebanon. We met with His Excellency President (Michel) Aoun, His Excellency (Prime Minister Najib) Mikati, and will meet shortly with His Excellency (Speaker of the House of Deputies Nabih) Berri, in order to learn about our stand regarding this crisis, and also where Lebanon stands regarding this crisis.”

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “We found a hole in the door [possible solution], so it doesn’t hurt to try it. We are trying to pass through it. God willing, we can find a solution to this crisis.”

I think that it is clear to everyone, that this matter could have been resolved from the beginning. However, now there have been developments, statements and measures, and the crisis has taken another turn. We hope that everyone will be able to find their patriotic sense in order to deal with this crisis. We don’t want things to get more complicated, as it has already become more complicated, when it comes to the relationship between Lebanon and the Gulf states. We do not want this situation to continue.”

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “It is clear that some have different opinions to ours, our opinions by which we see the national interest of the country. It is possible that there is a difference in views, and even in public opinion, but when you realise that there are required moves which serve the interest of the country, then this matter must take precedence over everything.”

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “We deal with the crisis first, then we see how we deal with the bigger problems, especially with regard to Lebanon and the Gulf, Saudi Arabia in particular. We know that there are problems and no one denies them, but we do not want this general atmosphere or these big problems to prevent us from reaching a resolution to this crisis.”

SOT, Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of Arab League (Arabic): “The majority knows the way to solve the crisis, but no one has started taking this path yet, no one has taken a single step on this path. The crisis must be resolved first, then we discuss other matters.”
