German Finance Minister Christian Lindner visited his French counterpart, Bruno Le Maire, in Paris on Monday, in his first meeting abroad after taking office last week.
The liberal politician warned of the risks of inflation in Europe. “The risk is real, and this is why we have to combine monetary stability in the monetary union and on the other hand more investments for the modernising of economies toward climate-friendly alternatives,” Lindner told a press conference.
Le Maire added the rising COVID-19 infections in the continent and the shortage of raw materials as risks to the European economy as France prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the EU.

SOT, Bruno Le Maire, French Minister of Economy and Finance “I think that of the key importance for all of us, the first one, of course, is the pandemic, which is resuming everywhere in Europe in Germany in France and in many other countries so we need to remain very cautious and vigilant to face this resuming of the pandemic. The second risk that we are all aware of is the bottlenecks and the shortages on the raw materials and some components like the semi-conductors, I think that we need to address that issue and we are still addressing that issue with the French government. The third risk is inflation and we are taking that risk very seriously and I want to be very clear on that key point, we are taking the risk of inflation and this reality very seriously because it has a direct impact on the daily life of our citizens.”

SOT, Christian Lindner, German Minister of Finance: “The risk [of inflation] is real, that’s why we have to combine monetary stability in the monetary union and on the other hand more investments for the modernizing of economies towards climate-friendly alternatives.”

SOT, Christian Lindner, German Minister of Finance “It has always been clear that my first visit abroad would take me to Paris because of the special relationship with Bruno Le Maire but in addition, because I am a liberal.”

SOT, Christian Lindner, German Minister of Finance: “It is a fortunate coincidence that on the one hand France will take over the presidency of the European Council and Germany will be in the presidency of the G7 next year on January 1st, and this opens in my eyes a window of opportunity for progress, progress for recovering after the pandemic to make further efforts for the global vaccination campaign.”

SOT, Christian Lindner, German Minister of Finance “France and Germany we, don’t always share the same ideas and at the beginning of the process, but the special character of our relationship is defined by the ability to find consensus in the end.”
