German Chancellor-designate Olaf Scholz expressed concern over the situation in Ukraine in Berlin on Tuesday.
“It is very important that nobody messes with history books in order to draw new borders. This is why we, alongside the US and other Europeans and others, see the troop movements at the Ukrainian border with concern. We need to make clear that it would be unacceptable if this became a threat for Ukraine,” stated Scholz.
Incoming Vice-Chancellor Habeck from the Greens proposed to provide additional support for Ukraine via ‘defensive weapons,’ which could be used to prevent the transport of weapons across the border, adding that Nord Stream 2 could be used to assist Ukraine.
Commenting on possible vaccination mandates in Germany, finance minister-designate Christian Lindner of the Free Democrats (FDP) announced that it is not on the new government’s agenda.
“There is an agreement that the Bundestag will work on non-fractional group drafts, and MPs will vote on these drafts in a debate,” added Lindner.
The press conference comes as Scholz, Habeck, and Lindner presented the coalition agreement between Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD), FDP, and Greens, setting the course for Germany’s political agenda under the new government.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Olaf Scholz, designated Chancellor of Germany (German): “It is very important that nobody messes with history books in order to draw new borders. This is why we alongside the US and other Europeans and others see the troop movements at the Ukrainian border with concern. We need to make clear that it would be unacceptable if this became a threat for Ukraine and that there is clearance about this among those, who are cooperating on this issue. President [Joe] Biden will address this issue surely in his talks and this is also the position of the European Union, therefore we are very clear.”
SOT, Robert Habeck, designated Vice Chancellor (German): “I have not understood why Germany does provide sanitary support but is not helping protect Ukrainian civilians in a way that they don’t have their feet blown up first. This is about preventing weapons systems like drones carrying mines or other explosive devices from landing behind the border leaving their deadly cargo in the backyards. I called it Defensive weapons. These are not weapons systems that would be capable of preventing a hot war. This has to be distinguished. As for the situation in Ukraine, the solution must be diplomatic.”
SOT, Christian Lindner, designated Finance Minister of Germany (German): “A vaccine mandate is not on the agenda of the Traffic Light coalition. There is an agreement that the Bundestag will work on non-fractional group drafts and MPs will vote on these drafts in a debate.”
SOT, Robert Habeck, designated Minister of Economy and Climate Protection (German): “Nord Stream 2 has not been approved yet. The scrutiny of German and European standards is still in progress. And within the framework of this scrutiny we will talk about how Ukraine’s foreign policy position can be incorporated into European efforts to act as a de-escalating factor.”
