Green Party chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock underlined the importance of the upcoming elections for the young generation at a campaign event in Mainz on Monday.
After the local candidate Tabea Rossner addressed the audience, Baerbock took to the stage and stressed the significance of Sunday’s federal elections for young people.
“This election is a generational election. Even though 14 million children and youngsters can not vote in this country, it concerns their future,” she said.
Baerbock also emphasised the importance of open discussion while seeking solutions to the climate crisis.
“I think being in dialogue with people that have different opinions opens up new horizons. That’s why in the last years I often visited lignite plants to find solutions together. In a worst-case scenario, you are getting booed,” she said.
The campaign rally was attended by young climate activists who had criticised the Green Party’s climate policies by defacing their posters. Baerbock addressed the activists after her speech and faced a round of questions from the audience.
According to a recent survey by the Institute for New Social Answers (INSA), the Greens are currently at 15 percent behind the Social Democratic Party, on 25 percent, and the Union bloc, on 22 percent. With a multi-party coalition needed to form a majority government after the elections, the Greens are almost certain to form part of any new administration.

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Green Party chancellor candidate (German): “We have space. We don’t accept what happens in the camps on Lesbos. That’s the mandate for my next federal government, to say: we have space, we are taking people and their families out of those tents set up in mud.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Green Party chancellor candidate (German): “I think being in dialogue with people that have different opinions opens up new horizons. That’s why in the last years I often visited Lignite plants to find solutions together. In a worst-case scenario, you are getting booed.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Green Party chancellor candidate (German): “That’s not only an absurd climate policy but also an absurd social and working policy. Especially in the field of aircraft, you have to underline that they have to respect the climate goals and especially make use of the means of retraining their employees.”
